LGBTI people in Bulgaria struggle first and foremost with building their own community, mobilizing that community and politicizing it. Bulgarian authorities on the other hand do not recognize homophobic and transphobic motivation of crimes as aggravating circumstance. There is no legal recognition of rainbow families, no procedure set in law for legal gender recognition and no safeguards against childhood genital modification in cases of intersexuality. Bulgarian educational system remains very conservative and promoting patriarchal values while both left- and right-wing political parties in the parliament hold homophobic and transphobic stances.
