Can a man born in Canada represent Ireland in Mr Gay Europe? But of course! Can a trans man take part in the Mr Gay competition? He is more than welcome!Can a 50 years old, HIV-positive Swede represent Norway in Mr Gay Europe? Already happened! And I am honoured to call Walter Heidkampf a friend – he is one of my real life heroes!What about if a drag queen signs up? A deaf person? A HIV positive? A bisexual? Hell, what if something as rare as a gay guy older than 50 register for Mr Gay Europe, what then?
Reality check: There is actually gay guys that live longer than 30-something, two deaf guys as already been in the MGE final, we have had at least two HIV positive finalists and it was a drag queen that initiated Mr Gay Europe in the first place!
In Mr Gay Ireland 2012 the winner Robert Obara is a Canadian citizen and it took just a blink of an eye before someone questioned his ability to be a proper representative for Ireland.
What? The young man lives and studies in Ireland, he is willing to take upon the task to represent Ireland in MGE/MGW, he was the best among equals and as far as I saw no one refused to take the money he worked so hard to collect for charity.
In the same final of Mr Gay Ireland there was one bloke that stood out as a bit different from the others; Sean was the first ever trans man taking part in a Mr Gay Ireland final.
His fellow finalists did not mind, I could see with my own eyes that Sean has for sure one of the lads, but still there were some twats that questioned his place in the final. Come on! What are you afraid of?
I congratulate the producers of Norway and Ireland that have been brave enough to open up their competitions to trans men – may the rest of Europe follow.
The Norwegian writer Arnulf Øverland (1889-1968) was a passionate opponent of the Nazis and in 1936 he wrote the poem “Du må ikke sove”/“Dare not to sleep!”.
The most famous – and to me the most beautiful – line in the poem is:
“Du må ikke tåle så inderlig vel den urett som ikke rammer deg selv!”/”You cannot permit it! You dare not, at all. Accepting that outrage on all else may fall!”
Food for thoughts, is it not?
The Mr Gay Europe slogan “Unity through diversity” was first time spoken in Budapest in 2008 – the year we were hunted by right-wing extremists with rotten eggs, sticks, glass bottles and death threats and protected by Hungarian riot police.
How easy it is to forget.
And why are so many of us afraid of bisexual men? I have – believe it or not – gotten several emails stating that bi-men should not be allowed to enter Mr Gay Europe! To me that is just as bad as the email I got from a delegate that would not take part as long as we allowed delegates from Israel to participate. I asked him to stay at home.
During Mr Gay World in South Africa in 2012 it was said over and over again; you cannot pick and choose which human rights you want to support and not.
It is all or nothing.
This I promise: As long as I am the president of Mr Gay Europe anyone considering themselves as a man, loving other men, with pride and courage to stand up for the rest of us is more than welcome to take part in Mr Gay Europe.
I honestly don’t care if a delegate is old or young, feminine or masculine, gay, bi or trans, deaf or blind, rich or poor; as long as you can stand out in a crowd and be a positive and strong representative for the gay Europe – welcome to the Mr Gay Europe family!

¿Puede un hombre canadiense representar a Irlanda en Mr. Gay Europe? ¡Por supuesto! Puede un transexual participar en Mr. Gay competition? ¡Es más que bienvenido!
¿Puede un hombre sueco VIH positivo representar a Noruega en Mr. Gay Europe? ¡Eso ya ocurrió! Y tengo el honor considerar a Walter Heidkampf mi amigo – ¡él es uno de mis héroes en la vida real!
¿Qué ocurre si una drag decide inscribirse? ¿Y una persona sorda? ¿Un VIH positivo? ¿ Un bisexual? ¿Y qué si algo aparentemente tan raro como un chico gay de más de 50 años decide participar en Mr. Gay Europe, qué ocurre entonces?
Vuelta a la realidad: Realmente hay chicos gays que viven muchos más años que los treinta y tantos, dos chicos sordos ya participaron en la final de MGE, hemos tenido al menos 2 finalistas VIH positivos y fue precisamente una drag queen la que inició en su primera edición Mr Gay Europe!
En Mr. Gay Ireland 2012 el ganador Robert Obara es ciudadano canadiense y bastó sólo un abrir y cerrar de ojos para que alguien cuestionase su capacidad para ser un buen representante de Irlanda.
¿Y qué? Este joven hombre vive y estudia en Irlanda, está dispuesto a asumir la tarea de representar a Irlanda en MGE/MGW, fue “el mejor entre los iguales” y por lo que vi nadie se negó a aceptar el dinero que tanto trabajo le costó conseguir para causas benéficas.
En la misma final de Mr. Gay Ireland había una persona que destacó como algo diferente respecto a los demás; Sean fue el primer hombre trans en tomar parte del certamen Mr. Gay Ireland.
A sus compañeros finalistas no les importó, pude ver con mis propios ojos que Sean incluso tenía admiradores entre sus propios compañeros, pero todavía había algunos gilipollas que cuestionaban su puesto en la final. ¡Venga ya! ¿De qué tenèis miedo?
Quiero felicitar a los productores de Noruega e Irland por haber sido suficientemente valientes de abrir sus competiciones a hombres transexuales – ojalá que el resto de Europa les siga en el ejemplo.

El lema de Mr. Gay Europe “Unidad a través de la diversidad” fue utilizado por primera vez en Budapest en 2008 – justo el año en el que fuimos perseguidos por extremistas de derechas con huevos podridos, cristales de botella y amenazas de muerte y tuvimos que ser protegidos por la policía antidisturbios húngara.
Qué fácil es olvidar para algunos…
¿Y por qué hay muchos de nosotros que tienen miedo de los hombres bisexuales? He recibido, aunque parezca increible, varios emails afirmando que no debería permitirse participar a los hombres bisexuales en Mr. Gay Europe! Para mi es tan malo como otro email que recibí de un delegado que afirmaba que no participaría si permitíamos a los delegados israelíes competir. Le respondí que se quedará en su país.
Durante Mr Gay World en Sudáfrica en 2012 se dijo una y otra vez; no puedes escoger y seleccionar qué derechos humanos apoyar y cuáles no.
Es todo o nada.
Lo prometo: Mientras que yo sea el presidente de Mr. Gay Europe cualquiera que se considere a sí mismo como un hombre, que ama a otro hombre, con orgullo y con coraje para luchar por el resto de nosotros, es más que bienvenido para formar parte de Mr. Gay Europe.
Honestamente, no me importa si un delegado es viejo o joven, femenino o masculino, gay, bi o trans, sordo o ciego; siempre que destaque entre la multitud por ser un representante fuerte y positivo para los gays europeos será bienvenido a la familia de Mr. Gay Europe!

Kann ein Mann, der in Kanada geboren ist, Irland beim Mr Gay Europe repräsentieren? Aber natürlich! Kann sich ein Transmann am Wettbewerb zum Mr Gay Europe beteiligen? Er ist mehr als willkommen.
Kann ein 50 Jahre alter, HIV-positiver Schwede beim Mr Gay Europe Norwegen repräsentieren? Schon passiert! Und ich fühle mich geehrt, Walter Heidkampf einen Freund zu nennen – er ist einer meiner Helden aus dem echten Leben!
Was ist, wenn sich eine Drag Queen anmeldet? Ein gehörloser Mensch? Ein HIV-positiver? Ein Bisexueller? Was zum Teufel, wenn etwas so seltenes passiert und sich ein schwuler über 50 Jahre älter Mann beim Mr Gay Europe registriert? Was dann?
Realitätscheck: es gibt da draußen tatsächlich schwule Männer, welche älter sind als 30 Jahre. Zwei gehörlose Kerle waren schon im Finale von MGE. Wir hatten mindestens zwei HIV-positive Finalisten und es war eine Drag Queen, die ersten Platz beim Mr Gay Europe belegte?
Der Gewinner von Mr Gay Irland 2012, Robert Obara, ist kanadischer Staatsbürger und es dauerte nur einen Wimpernschlag, bevor jemand seine Fähigkeit, eine angemessene Vertretung für Irland zu sein, hinterfragte.
Was? Der junge Mann lebt und studiert in Irland. Er ist bereit, die Aufgabe anzunehmen, Irland beim MGE/MGW zu repräsentieren. Er war der Beste unter seinesgleichen und soweit ich gesehen habe, weigerte sich niemand das Geld zu nehmen, für das so hart gearbeitet hat, um es für wohltätige Zwecke zu spenden.
Im gleichen Finale von Mr Gay Irland gab es einen Kerl, der sich etwas von den anderen unterschied; Sean war der erste Transmann, der an einem Mr Gay Irland Finale teilnahm.
Seine Kollegen aus dem Finale hatten nichts dagegen, konnte ich mit eigenen Augen sehen dass Sean Teil der Gruppe war. Dennoch gab es auch dort einige Deppen, die seinen Platz im Finale hinterfragten.
Ich gratuliere den Veranstaltern aus Norwegen und Irland für ihren Mut, den Wettbewerb für Transmänner zu eröffnen – vielleicht folgt auch der Rest Europas.
Der norwegische Autor Arnulf Overland (1889 – 1968) war ein leidenschaftlicher Gegner der Nazis und 1936 schrieb er das Gedicht »Du må ikke sove« (Du darfst nicht schlafen).
Die berühmteste – und für mich die schönste – Zeile aus dem Gedicht lautet:
„Du må ikke tåle så inderlig vel den urett som ikke rammer deg selv!”/ „Du darfst innerlich nicht das Unrecht erdulden, das Dich nicht selbst betrifft.“
Nährstoff für Gedanken, oder?
Der Mr Gay Europe Slogan „Unity through diversity“/“Einheit durch Vielfalt“ wurde das erste Mal in Budapest im Jahr 2008 gesprochen – in diesem Jahr wurden wir von Rechtsextremisten mit faulen Eiern, Stöcken, Glasflaschen beworfen sowie mit Morddrohungen gejagt und geschützt durch die ungarische Polizei.
Wie einfach es ist zu vergessen!
Und warum haben so viele von uns Angst vor bisexuellen Männern? Ich habe – man glaubt es kaum – etliche E-Mails mit Aussagen bekommen, Bi-Männern solle nicht erlaubt sein an der Wahl zum Mr Gay Europe teilzunehmen. Für mich ist dies genauso schlimm wie eine E-Mail, die ich von einem Delegierten bekam, in der stand, er würde nicht am Contest teilnehmen, solange wir Delegierten aus Israel erlauben teilzunehmen. Ich forderte ihn auf, zu Hause zu bleiben
Während der Mr Gay World Wahl 2012 in Südafrika hieß es immer wieder und wieder; wir können und nicht auswählen, welche Rechte wir unterstützen wollen und welche nicht.
Entweder alles oder nichts.
Dies verspreche ich: Solange ich Präsident von Mr Gay Europe bin, ist jeder, der sich für einen Mann hält, der andere Männer liebt, mit Stolz und Mut für den Rest von uns einzusetzen ist mehr als willkommen, an Mr Gay Europe teilzunehmen.
Es interessiert mich wahrhaftig nicht, ob ein Teilnehmer jung oder alt ist, feminin oder maskulin, schwul, bi- oder transsexuell, taub oder blind, reich oder arm; so lange wie du dich von der Masse abhebst und ein positiver und starker Repräsentant für schwules Europa bist – Willkommen in der Mr Gay Europe Familie!
Wir alle sind fabelhaft!
